Do You Get Dry Eyes?
Your eyes have tear glands that produce tears to lubricate them. This function can be compromised for various reasons such as ageing, poor lifestyle habits, diseases and medication.
Reasons why your eyes may be dry:
Age
The normal functioning of the tear glands declines as we age.
Screen use
When you look at the screen and concentrate hard, your eyes blink a lot less frequently. As a result your eyes become more easily strained and dehydrated.
Hormonal change
Menstruation, pregnancy and menopause may bring on hormonal imbalance that affects the tear gland production.
Poor Lifestyle Habits
Sleep deprivation, anorexia, stress, dehydration and poor nutrition may cause dry eyes.
Medications
Antidepressants, antibiotics, antihistamines, diuretics, birth control pills, ulcer medications and high blood pressure medications may cause dry eyes.
Illnesses
Some illnesses cause dry eyes such as Sjogrens, syndrome, glaucoma, thyroid disease, cold, rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus.
What’s Good about Fish Froth?
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Fish froth contains high quantities of omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for the eyes, brain and skin. They are also natural anti-inflammatories. They reduce tear gland inflammation, improve tear production and reduce tear film surface tension.
- Calcium
Like most meat bones, fish bones are rich in calcium. Calcium is important for our bones. Calcium in soup broth is easier to be absorbed than tablets.
- Gelatin
This is a gel-like, translucent and flavourless substance derived from collagen in fish and other animals. It is used for strengthening joints and bones.
- Protein
Protein in fish froth is nutritious and easy to absorb. It is excellent for building muscle strength for all ages.
- Iodine
Iodine is beneficial for IQ, the thyroid and healthy weight.
Fish Broth Recipe
You or your kids may be squeamish when you hear the word “fish broth”. There are ways to reduce the “strong” taste of fish. My boys love it.
A good candidate for fish froth would be a fish that doesn’t taste too fishy, such as leather jacket and salmon. Salmon head in particular is incredibly nutritious because it is oily and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, collagen and calcium.
- Fry diced onions, ginger and garlic in a little oil in a pot until golden.
- Throw in the salmon head, leather jacket or any whole fish and fry for a few minutes.
These two steps will reduce the fishy smell.
- Pour in boiling water enough to cover the ingredients. Bring to boil. Simmer for 20-30 minutes. Salt to taste.
- Add chopped up shallots of coriander. This will add fragrance to the soup and reduce the fishy taste.
- (Optional) Add diced carrot, tomatoes, potatoes, goji berries, bean curd or raw paw paw after step 2.
Enjoy a nutritious, nourishing and delicious soup!
